Fynebond is a water-white, room-temperature curing epoxy resin with excellent non-yellowing properties. It has been formulated by Dr Norman Tennent in order to be suitable for the repair of ceramics and glass. Prior to marketing, 3 years' testing of its ageing and working properties were carried out. It has been used by ceramics and glass conservators since 1994 and is now the prime epoxy favoured by many conservators in Britain, The Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe and in North America.

Technical Data

Fynebond epoxy resin (Component A) tends to crystallise below room temperature. Some batches may be crystalline at room temperature. As a result, this component should not be refrigerated but kept in a warm room. It has a good shelf life.
Fynebond epoxy hardener (Component B) should be kept cool, ideally in a refrigerator (not the freezer compartment), in order to enhance its shelf life which is at least 1 year under favourable conditions. If the hardener is kept refrigerated the bottle must be kept dry. The best method is to keep the hardener bottle in a sealed container with dry silica gel. The hardener should then be allowed to reach room temperature before opening, in order to prevent contamination by condensation of moisture.

The mixing proportion is in the ratio 10g resin: 3.2g hardener, as indicated on the bottles. For optimum results, including long-term non-yellowing, it is important to weigh the components accurately, ideally on a balance which reads to two decimal places. Some conservators choose to mix the components by volume. This is not recommended as it is not possible to measure volumes as accurately as weights. If mixing is being done by volume the correct ratio of components is different, in this case 10:4.1
Since the resin can become crystalline it is sometimes necessary to warm individual batches of resin each time a quantity is removed for use. (Do not continually reheat the 100g bottle.) This can be done in a warm oven (80ÂșC) or with a hair-dryer, ensuring the resin is fully fluid before adding the hardener. The cure time varies with temperature. At typical room temperature the cure time is 36-48 hours.

The resin is of moderately low viscosity and penetrates cracks easily making it ideal for glass repair.

Refractive Index.
The refractive index of Fynebond (1.565) makes it ideal for lead glass in particular. Mended breaks or cracks are difficult to detect.

Fynebond can be pigmented to give opaque fills or dyed to give transparent fills. With fumed silica, fills of the correct translucency for porcelain can be obtained.

Abrading and Polishing.
After 48 hours Fynebond can be abraded with flour paper, then increasingly fine grades of Micromesh (from 1,800 to 12,000). The final choice of a polishing cream depends on the individual conservator's preference, but Greygate Polishing Cream is that preferred by West Dean College. To minimise the work involved with abrasion, it is possible to achieve the optimum finish in the 12 to 36 hour period by smoothing with a warm spatula or polishing with glass paper and acetone.

Natural dark and light ageing, and accelerated light ageing have shown that Fynebond has a very good resistance to yellowing. Xenotest ageing has shown that no visible yellowing occurs in the time taken for perceptible fading of British Blue Wool Standard No 6 (at least 25 years' exposure at 250 lux).

Health and Safety.
Full information is supplied as separate data sheets. Epoxy resins can cause skin sensitisation, though it appears that only a small proportion of the population exhibit a predisposition to epoxy sensitisation. Tests carried out at St John's Institute of Dermatology, London, confirm the potential of the Fynebond resin component to give a positive skin reaction in sensitised individuals.
